TED Talk- Thandie Newton: Embracing Otherness, Embracing Myself

Thandie Newton’s interpretation of “self” and how it influences us felt very powerful to me.

The concept of “otherness” and “oneness” were interesting. I cannot help but wonder why it is that oneness disappears when you grow older. It was nice to hear how Newton was able to feel this concept while she was dancing or acting despite not being a toddler anymore.

The fact that Newton thought having no “self” was wrong and that she felt down about this was saddening. I am glad that in the end of her talk she recognized that this lack of “self” was not necessarily a bad thing.

I think that not having a “self” really opened Newton up to seeing and feeling things that other people cannot. Being constricted to a social norm almost seems suffocating to me after hearing what Newton had to say. After all, who wants to be the same as everyone else? I know that I certainly do not. Individuality is a lot more appealing to be around than unoriginality.
